Intelligent inspection of bank structures

Together with oQuay, GeoAI built a data-driven inspection system for waterways, based on modular open-source mapping technology combined with several AI image-recognition techniques.

Under the name GeoQuay, damage is detected and placed at the correct geographic position — with links to commonly used asset management systems.

01 — Waterways

6,500 kilometres of waterways

The Netherlands has some 6,500 kilometres of waterways. Canals and ditches drain surplus water from agricultural and peat areas and connect to the rivers — a large network that needs a lot of maintenance.

Banks are protected against erosion with, for example, timber or steel sheet piling, rock armour or nature-friendly banks. To prevent dangerous situations at high water, these structures are inspected regularly.

02 — Inspection

Traditional inspection is subjective

Traditional bank inspection is costly. The inventory is often done with paper maps, pen and notepad, sometimes with a GIS app and checklists. These methods give a rough, person-dependent estimate of the bank's condition and remaining service life.

  • How damage develops over several years is not visible.
  • No comparison is made with the material's degradation statistics.
  • Risk-based assessment is not consistent.

Balance performance, risk and cost

A wide variety of bank protections and damage types is detected and automatically positioned as lines on the bank geometries. The location acts as a key and can be used for many kinds of reports.

This lets asset managers better balance performance, risks, choice of measures and costs, and capture them in a digital maintenance plan — with links to common asset management systems.

Innovative inspection

Bank inspection

The bank is captured once with a camera, after which the images are interpreted multiple times by different AI models.

AI models

Trained by experts over several evaluation rounds and continuously validated by inspectors and asset managers. The models therefore predict objectively, based on the collective view of, for example, a damage type.

Automatic detection

Fully automatic, auditable because detections are recorded with segmentation in the image, and re-trainable. Geographic positioning makes year-on-year differences visible.

Benefits of GeoQuay

Cost-saving

GeoQuay saves you unnecessary inspection and maintenance costs.

Consistent and objective

Models are assessed by inspectors and asset managers, giving a uniform damage assessment across scenarios.

Transparent inspections

Linked to the geographic location of structures, so multi-year inspections and degradation become visible.

Asset management integration

Links with asset management systems give better insight into performance, risks, measures and costs.
